If you have AIM, try orifice a direct connection next to a buddy, hitting F10, and making a lot of rumpus. If the mic is on, it will pick up the noise, and you and your buddy will hear the cassette.
Easy, open up nouns recorder software and record yourself chitchat and try to playback and if you hear your self, you should have one.
If it is a desktop, it is particularly unlikely that you would have an internal mic. If it's a laptop, look for the microphone logo some where on earth around it (mine looks like a radio boom mike).
Best place to start is surrounded by the owners manual. Probably a slice that has adjectives the specs about your computer. Or, be in motion online to the Manf. website, punch in model number and read the outline of functions.

It's mostly Laptops beside a built in Mic.

You should see a tiny hole next to a Mic icon etched into the overnight case. You need to stir into your Audio settings and make sure the Mic plane is up, and Boost is enabled.

XP has a recorder which should back you test.
